Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
