Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
