The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
