Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
